Exposed roof eaves are particularly vulnerable to wildfires because they provide an easy entry and collection point for embers and flames. During a wildfire, high winds can carry burning embers over long distances, and these embers can settle in the eaves, which often have gaps or are left open for ventilation. If the eaves are not properly protected by enclosing them with fire-resistant materials, screens or flame retardant the embers can ignite, leading to the rapid spread of flames to the rest of the roof and the interior of a structure. This makes exposed eaves a critical weak spot in a home’s defense against wildfires, increasing the risk of significant damage or destruction.
